Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) Service Disabled Veteran Owned Business (SDVOSB)
The VOSB and SDVOSB Certifications were made to help US veterans who own businesses. The certification gives businesses access to government spending worth millions of dollars.
There are two ways that the SBA helps veterans: the veteran-owned small business (VOSB) program and the service-disabled, veteran-owned small business program (SDVOSB). Both programs have money set aside for contracts that eligible contractors can use.
The SDVOSB program's objective is to grant federal procurement agencies the authority to reserve acquisitions for exclusive competition among SDVOSB and VOSB and, if certain conditions and requirements are met, to make single-source awards to these businesses.
With a VOSB/SDVOSB certification, government contracting officials will know about your business. It will also give you and your business a fair chance to do well. Some more benefits are:
- Access to a wider range of procurement channels and contract vehicles
- Access to the SBA Office of Veteran Business Development
- 3% of federal contracts set aside for SDVOSB
- Opportunity to compete for sole-source and set-aside contracts across the federal government
To get VOSB or SDVOSB certification from the SBA, your company must meet the following requirements:
- Be a small business, as defined by the size standard for any NAICS code in the SAM profile of your business
- Have at least 51 percent of the business owned and run by veterans
- For certification as an SDVOSB, at least 51% of your business must be owned and run by one or more disabled veterans
- If a veteran is totally and permanently disabled and can't run their business daily, their business may still be eligible if their spouse or a permanent caregiver is helping them run it
See the final rule in the Federal Register for a full list of who is eligible and what they need to do.
To be a Veteran of the United States, you must meet at least one of the following:
- Served in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard on active duty for any length of time and didn't get a dishonorable discharge
- Served as a Reservist or in the National Guard and were called to federal active duty or became disabled from a disease or injury that started or got worse during your duty.
